Behavior Technician

Job Summary:

The Behavior Technician (BT) is a specialized support role that provides targeted behavioral intervention services to students with significant behavioral needs within a center-based school. The BT works under the guidance of the Behavior Consultant (BC) and collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to implement and support individualized Positive Behavior Support Plans (PBSPs).

The BT may support multiple students and/or classrooms focusing on the implementation of behavior intervention strategies data collection and skill acquisition programs. Responsibilities include modeling interventions for staff supporting fidelity of PBSP implementation and assisting in reducing challenging behaviors while promoting replacement skills.

The BT plays a key role in ensuring consistency data integrity and adherence to evidence-based practices across settings.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Implement individualized behavior intervention strategies in alignment with student PBSPs under the direction of the Behavior Consultant (BC/BCBA).
  • Collect record and maintain accurate behavioral and skill acquisition data to inform decision-making.
  • Enter and manage behavior data incident reports and ESR documentation within the school-wide data system.
  • Support the development of communication social self-help and academic skills using evidence-based practices.
  • Promote generalization of skills across settings staff and environments.
  • Model and support effective implementation of behavior strategies for classroom staff to ensure consistency and fidelity.
  • Assist in monitoring and supporting fidelity of PBSP implementation across assigned students or classrooms.
  • Participate in and support the implementation of Skill-Based Treatment (SBT) sessions as appropriate.
  • Provide behavioral support across classrooms based on student and program needs.
  • Act as a first responder to behavioral incidents using district-approved crisis intervention and de-escalation procedures.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to support student progress and engagement.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and organizational policies.
  • Attend and participate in required trainings meetings and professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associates or Bachelors degree in Psychology Education Special Education or a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience working with individuals with moderate to severe disabilities or in an educational or clinical setting is preferred.
  • Completion of the 40-hour Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) training is required (may be obtained upon hire).
  • Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification is not required for this position.
  • This position does not include supervised fieldwork hours toward BCBA certification.

  • Ability to remain calm and respond effectively during crisis or high-stress situations using approved intervention strategies.
  • Demonstrate the ability to implement behavior intervention strategies with accuracy and support consistency across staff and settings.
  • Ability to model guide provide critical feedback and support staff in the implementation of behavior supports and classroom strategies.
  • Strong data collection organization and documentation skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and school-based data systems for documentation and reporting.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary team members to support student outcomes.
  • Commitment to fostering a safe respectful and inclusive learning environment for all students.
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting and physical support as needed to ensure student safety and participation.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing student and program needs.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations including but not limited to visual and/or audio logical appliances and devices to increase mobility.

  • Ability to move safely and efficiently throughout the school day including running responding quickly and performing physical movements such as standing walking bending kneeling and crouching.
  • Ability to respond quickly to behavioral crises in accordance with Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training.
  • Ability to lift and assist with moderate to heavy lifting (up to 75 pounds) with or without mechanical assistance.
  • Ability to wear personal protective and safety equipment as required to ensure staff and student safety.

Compensation and Details:

  • Compensation: $22.07-$25.96 per hour commensurate with experience.
  • Schedule: Full-time Year-round 190 days
  • Employee Group: non-union hourly
  • Benefits: Full benefits package including health dental vision disability and life insurance. MPSERS provided retirement plan.
  • FLSA: non-exempt
